Week 14

Finally, we made it through Week 14.  Thank you everyone for a wonderful day.  Ruthie, we miss you.

Presentation was so much fun.  I am so excited that everyone is getting more confident in their presentation. It has been a wonderful journey.  I loved all the stories you shared. Thank you so much for taking time to prepare. Next week presentation is "Humorous Interpretation" - share a funny story, a poem or a narrative joke.  Have fun.

Science Experiment with Mr. Herson is always fun.  We had fun watching the water disperse as we squeeze a drop of alcohol.  The kids had wonderful questions about if different liquids were used instead of water, will it be the same?  Maybe, they'll ask you to try it out with them, be prepared. Ha!ha!

New Grammar
Timeline: Song - CC CD
We sang through the Timeline song doing the hand motions learned during the opening ceremony. Somehow, they were stumbling after Columbus sails to the Caribbean... Please work with them at home.

History: Song - CC CD
We learned the meaning of tycoon and we learned a little bit about the different businesses of the four tycoons.  To remember the names of the tycoons, I did some drawings on the board (will send pictures via email). We sang through the song doing the following hand motions:
tycoons - tip hat and bow head like a gentlemen
 names - signs for the letter "V", "R", "C", "S"
fueled - "A" left hand tip on an "O" right hand, like pouring oil
Industrial Age - palm in curved 5-hands, fingers and interlock and bounce twice, representing the gears in an engine
resources - "R" right hand facing up and rolls over thrice

Science: Song - CCC NoGreaterJoy
I briefly explained the meaning of an element and we read through the sentence a lot of times and sang through the song a couple of times using the illustration (will send via email) on the board to remember the definition. Again, this is a long sentence with a lot of new vocabulary, continue to work with them at home.  By the way, if you are interested in making lapbooks, you may want to visit this site for free lapbook materials in Chemistry. Be sure to click the Teacher's guide as well. Have fun.

MathSong - CCC NoGreaterJoy
I briefly shared about measuring distance and they seem to enjoy answering the question about the memory work.  I will send you the illustration I have on the board. Have fun answering the worksheets I gave out.

EnglishSong - CCC NoGreaterJoy
We continued with irregular verbs and we learned "break". We went over the memory work a lot of times and even played a game - they broke eggs (plastic), and played a matching game.  My observation was because breaks is the third word (even if it is just a plural form in the present tense), the kids thought it was the past tense. I corrected them on that, please reinforce that at home.  Thanks!

Latin: Song - Opening Ceremony's Song
We sang through John 1:2 and we added the hand motion for this.  The children are not required to learn the sign language for memory master. This is another help for them to remember the words.  The plus side of this is we are learning another language (sign language) aside from Latin and English.  Isn't learning fun?

GeographySong - CCC NoGreaterJoy
We are now in the Northwest Mountains.  We went over the mountains over and over so we won't forget. The maps we are using in class is a little confusing at times.  Just continue to work with them at home using the Trivium table.

Fine Arts
We learned about Norman Rockwell, America's best loved illustrator, a storyteller with a brush.  When I saw some of Norman Rockwell's work a while back, I loved it immediately.  I realized that a picture is really worth a thousand words.  I almost blurted out something about Santa, good thing somebody was there to stop me. Thank you so much! I made a cover page of the Saturday Evening Post for them to draw their story on (see below).  I can send you the pdf file if you are interested, let me know. Next week, please bring your coloring materials for our project, water color if available.

Review Game was fun.  I am really happy that the kids can recall their memory work inspite of all these snow days.  Kudos to every parents who patiently work with their children. Congratulations everyone.
