We made it through the end. Hooray! Congratulations to everyone for a job well done. It has been an honor and privilege working along side all of you as we encourage the love for learning to our kids. Thank you very much for all your support and encouragement throughout the year.

Review
Thank you very much to all the parents who were there to help with the review. We were able to cover all subjects from Week 13 to 24. In my email, I mentioned all the things that we've observed during the review. I hope it will help you as you prepare them for Memory Masters next week.
Auction
Thank you for bringing in gifts for the kids. They had a wonderful time and I was glad to see them happy with what they have accomplished. I was even happier to see how they learned to share their gifts with their classmates. What a blessing to see!
Verse
Congratulations to the six children and three parents who memorized the whole Chapter 6 of Ephesians. I am hoping the parents are going to match the six (we are half way there). It has been an exciting journey doing the whole chapter with all of you. One verse a week and here we are in Week 24 and we've memorized the whole chapter. After MM, Dawn and I will start memorizing the Book of James, our goal is to memorize one chapter a month. We are hoping to be done by the end of September (5 months, 5 chapters). If anyone is interested to join us, let me know. We will be each other's cheerleader. Thank you for helping reach our goal!

Week 23
Hooray! We are really close to the end. Everyone has been doing marvelously.
Thank you Mrs. Kershner for introducing us to Antonin Dvorak with everyone participating. It was exciting to see the life of Dvorak as performed by the whole campus. We were able to listen to the Fourth Movement of Serenade of Strings. If you want to read more about Dvorak, this is an interesting site.
It has been wonderful getting to know your kids through their presentations. I was glad to have enjoyed their final presentation on their favorite memory of CC. I sure hope when they are older, they can look back to these wonderful memories.
Most of the kids finished their Science project. Come and see how their protectors work next time we meet. For those who brought their egg protector to finish at home, please make sure they bring it next time for the egg drop challenge.

The distributive law can be tricky, but I think they understood the concept. Aside from memorizing the law, we substituted the letters with numbers and solved the equations. Keep up the good work.

Review of first conjugation Future Perfect Tense. While reviewing, I reminded the kids about being very careful with the vowel sounds of the conjugations. We focused on 3rd person plural "erunt" (Present Perfect Tense), "erant" (Pluperfect Tense), and "erint" (Future Perfect Tense). And as before, for the Latin Challenge, "to be" future perfect active indicative, all you have to do is just add "fu". Keep practicing Personal Pronoun "I" and "We", and you will be able to do the Latin Challenge. Go for it!
Timeline: Song - CC CD
We finished the whole Timeline. Hooray! We practiced the Timeline by dividing it into years - 3000 B.C., 2000 B.C., 1000 B.C., etc., and then knowing the ages/eras - Age of Exploration, Age of Absolute Monarchs, etc. It made it easier to remember and not be confusing. Continue listening to the President's Song in preparation for Week 24.

Stan in Western Asia - the names of these five countries are very challenging. We had to repeat it over and over again for the kids to remember the names. These five countries used to be part of the USSR until 1991.
Verse
We are at the end. This week's verse is short, next week's verse is even shorter. We have one more week to recite the verse. We were able to practice the whole of Ephesians 6 while Mrs. Rittenhouse was hiding eggs inside the classroom. The kids for sure know the first nine verses, and most of them know the armor of God, so it should not be a problem to finish the last few verses. I know they can do it, especially if their parents do it with them. Update: three kids and two parents memorized Ephesians 6 already, come on parents, we are lagging behind. I really hope to get everyone to recite them next time we meet. I am willing to skip lunch just to listen to everyone recite the chapter. It would be filling enough. Enjoy working on the verse!
Review Game
I did not realized that the kids still enjoy Easter egg hunting. It was really exciting to see them helping each other to find the eggs. The kids did a wonderful job with the review game. Keep on practicing the memory work for MM. Next week's review game - thank you very much to all the parents who responded and promised to be there to help (we have at least 5 parents, at most 6). Each child will be given a card with all the subjects, each parent is assigned a subject. Each child will be tested on one subject at a time. The kids will be tested on materials from Week 13-24, sort of like Mock MM testing. We will go over the finer details next time.
Week 24's final 30 minutes (or more) will be our auction time. You are welcome to bring in an item or two your kids would enjoy, but you are not required. I will probably have enough little things for the kids to bid on and enjoy.

Week 22
It is April already and we have two more weeks to go. For the kids doing MM, Parent proof is due next week. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Mrs. Bayley for introducing us to the Great Composer Brahms. We were able to learn a little bit more about Brahms. He is one of the 3Bs of classical music (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms). We were also introduced to two new vocab words - fortissimo and allegro giocoso, and the triangle. I was impressed on how the kids were able to sit quietly and listen to Brahms Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Third Movement. To learn more about Brahms, check this out.
Presentation has been fun. We've learned informal and formal table setting, a little bit of self-defense, how to play the violin, and make vanilla icing. Thank you so much for helping your children with all the presentation throughout the year. Next week's presentation will be our last (we are eliminating presentation on Week 24 to give way to our Auction). Since it is the last, the kids are requested to share their favorite CC memory for this school year. Parents are welcomed to share as well.
The last of our Science Experiment - the Egg Protector Construction Project. Thank you Mr. Herson for walking us through the materials and "how to" of the project. The kids have one more week to build their Egg protector. Testing of the protector will be done on Week 24. It sure is going to be exciting to see which protector will really protect eggs. There will be lots of clean-up as well. 😀

Verse
We reviewed last week's verse while learning this week's verse. Two more weeks and we should be able to memorize the whole of Ephesians 6. This is a wonderful accomplishment plus we are hiding God's word in our hearts. I am open and ready to listen to anybody prepared to recite the whole of Ephesians 6. A quick update: We have two students and two parents who recited the verse. We have seven parents and seven kids more to go. Remember, this is our class goal... we can do it! if I remember correctly, all the kids know the first nine verses already. So far, when we are reviewing the verse in class, they seem to know the verses. Please encourage them to do this. It would be a great accomplishment for the class. Allow me to thank you in advance.
Review Game
Darts and review... the kids did really well. They did find out that they need more practice. So, keep on reviewing. We will all finish strong. I told the kids I will do memory masters with them.

Week 21
Getting really close to the end. We have three more weeks left. It has been a wonderful adventure. The kids are doing great, and I can see they all want to finish strong. Keep on!
Thank you, Mrs. Peters for the wonderful introduction to our Great Composer Beethoven. We were introduced to Exposition, Development, Recapitulation and Coda. Presentation was so much fun. We learned to make/taste lemon cookies, play the guitar, fold a paper ball, draw Japanese animals through shapes and cut an apple with the least amount of waste. Life skills! Thank you for helping your child prepare for presentation every week. Next week will be another demonstration from Elle, Ellie, Jayven and Ruthie. Have fun preparing.
We finished our straw bridges and would like to thank Mr. Boyer for being our structural engineer for the day. The kids were great. No bridges broke. Everybody won. (Look, Mrs. Rittenhouse, 3sss). It was a wonderful lesson for the kids, too - to learn to work with others, as this is their first group project.

To introduce them to the third law of thermodynamics, I briefly explained the different measures of temperature - Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. When we say absolute zero temperature, we are talking about 0°K which is -273.15°C, or -459.7°F. Check this site for more information on the third law. I also briefly mentioned that there is a zeroth law, check this out to learn more about it.

Again, if you are reviewing it at home, separate them into periods (age), note what event is immediately after that age. This will make it easier to remember the Timeline, and makes it less confusing when saying the whole Timeline. Keep up the good work!
Verse
We are in Paul's final greetings to the people of Ephesus... the reason he is writing to them. We were able to go through the verse a couple of times, since we were not able to do it during the opening ceremony. I am open to listen to the memory verse anytime during the lunch hour for the next three weeks. Two students and one parent in our class recited the verse already, that means we have seven students and eight parents more to go. Any parents interested to recite the verse are always welcome to see me too. This is your opportunity to encourage your child to do the memory verse with you - our class goal!

Week 20
We really are coming to a homestretch... the kids are doing marvelous. Keep up the good work!
The second week of our orchestra unit introduced us to the different period of classical music and selected composers during the classical and Romantic Era. The kids enjoyed a brief game of music vocabulary and the instrument of the orchestra. Thank you very much Mrs. Herson, we enjoyed every moment of it. My book recommendation for the orchestra is "The Story of the Orchestra" by Robert Levine.
Before we started class, I reminded the kids of the announcement Mrs. Herson gave during the opening ceremony. We are very fortunate to be able to use the facility as our meeting place, as visitors to this place, we need to learn to take care of everything that is in it. I also stressed the rule of being mindful with our words. I feel like I am preaching to the choir because I know these kids are model kids. I just told them that they need to be role models and learn to take care of the younger ones. They seem to take it well.
Presentation was exciting. We learned a few things about different Asian countries (something dear to my heart) - India, Pakistan, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea, Hong Kong and cities - Calcutta, Tokyo and a city in North Korea. It was interesting that nobody presented on the same country and they have their own special reason why they chose the country they reported on. We learn something new everyday, don't we? Next time's presentation is Demonstration: Make or do something. Show the class how to make or do something allowing audience participation if possible. Show all the steps, narrating as you go (class divided into two weeks). The following kids volunteered to present the first week (March 27) - Nolan, Caroline, Dawn, Reid and Jacob. The following kids will present the second week (April 3) - Elle, Ruthie, Ellie and Jayven. Have fun preparing.
Science experiment with Mr. Herson as always, is so much fun. The first group project of the year, the kids are paired (one boy, one girl) to construct a bridge from straws. We have two weeks for this project and I would say I am really impressed because the kids spent a big part of their lunch hour working on their bridges. We learned about appositives. Although our definition only states " a noun (or pronoun)", I mentioned that it can also be a noun phrase. I gave them a few examples and they gave me some examples as well.

When I told the kids that the Vietnam War started in 1955, everybody was armed and ready to devour me because our history sentence states, "In 1965,..." Then I have to explain that the US troops was sent in 1965 to Vietnam making our sentence correct. This site is an easy reading about the Vietnam War. While telling them that the Vietnam War encompassed four presidents (two of which I cannot remember), the kids sang through the "Presidents' Song" and we were able to figure out the four presidents - Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. I tried to tell them that the sentences for both Korean and Vietnam War are very similar with only the key words that are not the same. I reminded them to be very careful and think about what they are memorizing (own their memory work).

I briefly reviewed where 𝜋 came from and encourage them to do the experiment at home (get anything circle and measure the circumference and diameter, get the ratio and the answer will always be 3.14). We reviewed the area of the circle and proceeded with the circumference. A quick review, radius is half of the diameter, so with the formula for Circumference, 2 𝜋r, it can be substituted with 𝜋d. I also pointed out the difference between r² and 2r. I did mention that the only time the area and the circumference of the circle will be the same if the radius is 2 and nothing else. It would be good to review that at home. Again, I would encourage you to help them with the application at home because I am sure they can recite the formulas in their sleep. I forgot to post my book recommendation for circles last week. "Sir Cumference and the Dargon of Pi" by Cindy Neuschwander.

Our focus on the second law of thermodynamics is heat flow and I believe the kids understood the concept really well with the example hot water left on its own will cool down and not warm up. It is one direction - the concept of irreversibility - what goes out will not come back. A good tie in to our announcement to be careful with our words. Another example I gave was spray can, when you spray, you will not be able to retrieve the gas that goes out. I briefly mentioned the other component of the second law, entropy - every isolated system becomes disordered in time. If you want to learn more about the second law, check this out.

We reviewed what was taught during the opening ceremony. We focused on time periods - the dates and what events follow immediately. This is for them to not be confused when saying their timeline.

We were able to review Ephesians 6:18-20 a few times. Someone asked if this is included in MM. No it is not, but the goal of the class is to memorize the verse so we are doing it, myself included. The kids can come see me anytime now for reciting the passage. Any parent interested in reciting the whole of Ephesians 6 is welcome to come see me too. Thank you very much for encouraging your kids to do this. I would consider this more important than anything else because this is God's word. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away." Matthew 24:35

Week 19
We are counting down the days... we are close to the end. Congratulations everyone for doing a wonderful job. Keep on and finish strong! Nolan, we miss you! Happy Birthday!
We had to divide the time for art, as we need time to allow the background to dry. We learned gradient (ombre) painting first thing in class. The kids were wonderful...they followed instructions really well.
Presentation was fun. Everyone seems to love Aesop fables. Aside from the moral lesson of the stories, we learned something special this week. We learned two special words - "adaptation" and "sour-graping". Ask the kids about the two words. Next week's presentation is on geography: Tell us about a country/city in Asia. Where is it on the map? What is the climate? What type of government does it have? What is the official language? Add anything interesting about the country/city. Have fun preparing!

I briefly discussed the first law of thermodynamics by giving them an example. The kids seem to understand the concept of energy not being destroyed or created. For more about the laws of thermodynamics, check out this and this. Just a fun fact... there is a zeroth law of thermodynamics, which was not really recognized until the 1930's.

We played our usual game, what is before this time period. Continue on working on the Timeline at home. Again, I encourage them to know the dates, it will be very helpful in the future.

The area of a circle. I briefly discussed hoe pi (ratio of the Circumference and diameter) came to be. I encouraged them to go home and measure the Circumference of any circle they find at home and divide it with the diameter and they will always get 3.14.... We also worked on the application of the formula. A lot of them struggled with the application, so you may want to work on this at home.

We continue looking into countries in Asia. This time it is Southeast Asia. We did not encounter any problems identifying the countries this week.
Verse
We worked on last week's and this week's verse. We were even able to review from v. 10-19. The kids are doing great. Keep on encouraging them.
Science experiment was short. We learned Bernoulli's principle by blowing over the top of a strip of paper. I discussed a little bit about how an airplane fly using just four words - lift, weight, thrust and drag. We did not have time to fold paper airplanes for fun (paper airplanes does not really describe lift), but we might have the opportunity next week. The second part of the art project was the real project. We learned about Berthe Morisot, one of the few women artist in the 1800's. The interesting thing we learned about her is that she is married to Eduoard Manet's brother, Eugene. We focused on texture painting. I made two colors of texture paint (1/2 cup cornstartch, 3 T white glue and 2 T white paint) - white and gray (added a tinge of black to the recipe). We painted circles with the textured paint. The project came out really marvelous! The kids were so proud of their work, and I am proud of them.
This is the end of our Art Projects, but I hope the kids will continue to be inspired to do more art projects on their own. As long as they have the tools, they can learn anything. It has been a wonderful six weeks of art projects. I am inspired to continue painting. Next week, we will continue with our Great Composers.

Week 18
We are so privileged to have the principal flutist, Mrs. Reighley, of Delaware Symphony Orchestra with us. It was a fun-filled morning as we learned about the instruments of the orchestra. We even learned about the different kinds of flute (wooden flute, alto flute, bass flute). Thank you very much, Mrs. Reighley for a wonderful, fruitful morning. I could not have been more proud of the kids who sat there with their best behavior for a long time. Congratulations! Presentation was really fun, the kids seems to like Claude Monet a lot, half of the class did their presentation on Monet. I am really glad that the kids has been using KWO during their presentation. Next week's presentation: Narration - narrate a fairy tale, a fable or a tall tale. Make sure you are narrating not reading. Feel the emotion of the story and make it evident in your voice. We did a lot of application. What is the area of a triangle with a base of # and height of #? It was fun and it kept the kids thinking and computing. This video explains how the area of a triangle was derived from the area of a rectangle. It even discuss why the units are squared. Enjoy!

I explained a little bit about Newton's 3rd Law of Motion. Force always comes in pairs - when I sit on a chair, I exert a force downward while the chair need to exert a force upward or it will collapse and I will fall. This is the video of the third law. Found an interesting site on conceptual physics which you might find helpful while teaching the kids.
