Week 18
We are so privileged to have the principal flutist, Mrs. Reighley, of Delaware Symphony Orchestra with us. It was a fun-filled morning as we learned about the instruments of the orchestra. We even learned about the different kinds of flute (wooden flute, alto flute, bass flute). Thank you very much, Mrs. Reighley for a wonderful, fruitful morning. I could not have been more proud of the kids who sat there with their best behavior for a long time. Congratulations! If you want to learn more of about the orchestra, this is a good site to hear the different instruments of the orchestra. Next week's fine arts is the last of the great artist. We will work with paint, so please bring paintbrushes. Thank you!
Presentation was really fun, the kids seems to like Claude Monet a lot, half of the class did their presentation on Monet. I am really glad that the kids has been using KWO during their presentation. Next week's presentation: Narration - narrate a fairy tale, a fable or a tall tale. Make sure you are narrating not reading. Feel the emotion of the story and make it evident in your voice. Have fun preparing!
Science experiment focused on Simple Machines - the screw and inclined plane in particular. It was a simple but a good introduction to simple machine. Thank you Mr. Herson. If you want to learn more about simple machines, check out this site.
New Grammar and Review
With the limited time, we reviewed Week 13-18 facts, as new grammar is introduced.
English: Song - CCC NoGreaterJoy5
Five Kinds of Nouns (Usages) - the kids know them and they used the Essentials Song for memory (that means they have more than 5, which is okay, according to Mrs. Herson). I asked them to use that particular noun usage in a sentence. The kids seem to be struggling with indirect object.
History: Song - CC CD
I briefly (hahaha, not really brief) introduced the United Nations to the kids. Check out the United Nations website if you want to know more about the United Nations and its different Councils (click Main Organs for info on the councils).
Math: Song - CCC NoGreaterJoy5
We did a lot of application. What is the area of a triangle with a base of # and height of #? It was fun and it kept the kids thinking and computing. This video explains how the area of a triangle was derived from the area of a rectangle. It even discuss why the units are squared. Enjoy!
Science: Song - CCC NoGreaterJoy5
I explained a little bit about Newton's 3rd Law of Motion. Force always comes in pairs - when I sit on a chair, I exert a force downward while the chair need to exert a force upward or it will collapse and I will fall. This is the video of the third law. Found an interesting site on conceptual physics which you might find helpful while teaching the kids.
Latin: Song - CC CD
Review of Future Tense first conjugation. Also a review of "to be" future active indicative. Keep reviewing Latin... sometimes we tend to take the things we know really well for granted. I will try to do something different next week to keep them motivated.
Geography: Song - CCC NoGreaterJoy5
More Central Europe... we reviewed last week's Central Europe and added this week's. Continue on reviewing the maps, especially the countries hidden under the mountains. Keep up the good work.
Timeline: Song - CC CD
Thank you Mrs. Reid for doing Timeline with us during the opening ceremony. We will try to work more on Timeline next week.
Verse: Song
Please work on the verse at home... we will try our best to work on this next week.
It was a full morning, but we made it through. We did not have enough time for a more comprehensive review, but I know you will do it at home. Keep up the good work.
Have a wonderful week!
Zabrina
