Week 17
Hello everyone! A full and busy morning for everyone. Jacob, we missed you. Hope you are feeling better.
I was so impressed with the kids presentation. They were very convincing... we are now making homemade cookies, eating healthy breakfast, raising chickens, growing our own vegetables, riding horses, visiting the aviary at the zoo and buying a flying horse (?). Thank you so much for helping them prepare for this "Persuasion" presentation. They really gave very good reasons and arguments. Next week's presentation: Tell us about your favorite artist. Where were they from? When did they live? What type of art did they make? (Bring in a sample/picture of their work). So far, we have discussed Rembrandt, Linnaeus, Gainsborough, Monet, and Degas and we have Morisot left to discuss. If they have another artist in mind, that is fine, too. Have fun researching and maybe making an art project.
In Science, our experiments were based on two forms of energy and Newton's First Law of Motion. It was a very good review for everyone. The kids enjoyed the experiments. Thank you, Mr. Herson. The kids had the opportunity to help the younger kids in Mrs. Reeser's class. I am really proud of how the kids took care of the young ones. Thank you!
New Grammar and Review

We continued our discussion on World War II, and went over the leaders of the different countries during the Second World War. Eisenhower & MacArthur are both generals during WWII, one in Europe and the other in the Pacific (Asia). We reviewed the leaders of both World Wars. I asked the kids to give examples of a nouns. They seem to know their nouns, but are struggling a little bit with examples for "activity" and "idea". Review that with them at home.

Newton's second law of motion was a short sentence to remember. I explained a little bit about the formula... you will need more force to move a fridge than an ice cooler. The harder you throw a ball, the faster it goes. You can check this video for the explanation. This video is a funny one to enjoy.

We reviewed first conjugation future tense. We learned "to be" future active indicative (which is the same as first conjugation future perfect tense). So far, the kids are doing great.
Timeline: Song - CC CD
We went back to "Age of Exploration"... this is the part where it gets confusing. The different "Age of..." I encouraged them to remember the dates, so they will remember where they are in history. Again, I mentioned that we should not be memorizing for Memory Master (dates not needed). We are doing this for ourselves. So that when they did not get the title "MM", they will still feel proud and accomplished of what they learn throughout the year. I reminded them that we are doing everything for God. Ultimately, our boss is God!

The area of a square. Again, we focused more on applications than memorization although we had to review our squares. My questions were something like...if the area is 144, what is the side? if the side is 12, what is the area? it is good for the kids to know how to apply what they are memorizing. Keep practicing!

Central Europe... some of the countries are difficult to find in the map we are using because it is covered with mountains - do take note of that. We will continue with more Central Europe next time.
We were able to review memory work from the last six weeks (except Geography), do take time to continue on reviewing them. We are nearing the end of our school year, encourage the kids to keep up with their memory work even if they miss a class or two, especially if they will go for Memory Masters. Keep up the good work!
Fine Arts
We learned about Degas and since his art focused on movement, we made sculptures. The kids were amazing, and they showed their creativity and individuality in their project, which they enjoyed a lot. Thank you so much for the parents who were there to help with the very involved art project. I am sure you've seen you kids work of art, and it must be dry by now. I told them they can paint the sculpture if they want. Hope you can send me a photo of their finished project. I am actually thinking of displaying their art project at the end of the school year program. Just a side note, if the sculpture keeps falling off the base, try using hot glue gun after the paint is dry. If you want to replicate this project at home, check out this site for instruction on the skeleton of the sculpture, then wrap the skeleton with plaster gauze (available at your local craft store or medical supplies store). Enjoy!
We finished the whole armor of God this past week. We were not able to review the verse in class, but were able to listen to the verses a couple of times while they were doing their art project. Please review Ephesians 6:1-9 and 10-17 at home with the extra week we have. Thank you very much for helping us reach our goal.

Week 16
The kids felt the room was really empty, because someone was not there. It was really cute and sweet for them to be looking for Mrs. Rittenhouse. They missed her for a little bit. The kids are becoming more observant, which is good. Nolan, we missed you, too. Hope you are having a wonderful time with your family.
Presentation, as usual, was exciting. We had a lot of energy and I believe I found my substitute in case I am unable to teach. Thank you so much for helping your kids prepare their Presentation every week. It has been a good year of presentation and the kids are getting more comfortable in public speaking. Next Week's Presentation is Persuasion: Tell us why we should buy something (or convince us why we should believe something). Allow your kids to give you good reasons, not just because it is good/fun (banned words).😉😉😉
Thank you, Mr. Reeser for an exhilarating science experiment. The kids had a wonderful time dropping paper on the floor and thinking. Hooray for Dialectic Stage! We will learn more about this next week in Newton's 2nd Law of Motion.

(AD by five hundreds) 500 AD... 1000 AD... 1500 AD...etc. and then think about what event is after the dates. It is a good way to remember the Timeline. Again, I am encouraging the kids to remember the dates... very helpful!

We started our unit in Geometry. The kids know their formulas so well, so we did an application. What is the area of a rectangle, if the length is 6 and width is 3... I also reminded them of the perimeter... it is just around the rectangle not the whole area of the rectangle. Application of what they are memorizing is what we've focused on. Keep on practicing at home. I would recommend the Sir Cumference books, which is fun and engaging. The Isle of Immeter is a good one for differentiating area and perimeter. Enjoy!

Week 15
It was a wonderful morning for everyone. I am just so proud of the kids and their teachers (yes, that is you!). Thank you very much for all the hard work you are doing with the kids and the encouragement you've been giving them. I am encouraged to be with them every week.
We started with Fine Arts. We learned about Thomas Gainsborough, and we painted a landscape. Their pictures were really good. It took longer than the time allotted for us, but thanks to Mr. Reeser for giving us a little bit of his time. Most of them finished their landscape pictures, I told them to draw people in a different paper and cut it out and use their landscape drawings as backdrop for their scene. If you want to learn more about Gainsborough, check this site out. Next week, we will be focusing on Monet and I've decide to do it in our own class... please bring paintbrushes (if they have different sizes, that would be great, if not even just one paintbrush is good), I will take care of the paint and other supplies.
Science with Mr. Reeser was related to one of our previous experiment with sound (wine glass harp). We learned today that the more fluids in the bottle makes the sound lower. Check out the previous post on the glass harp and take a closer look on what particular glass makes a lower sound. If you want to replicate the experiment, check this site out. Do you think a bigger glass with lesser water will make a lower or higher sound than a smaller glass with more water? Try it out! Let me know what result you got. Have fun!
Presentation was informative. The kids expounded more on what they know (on a particular Timeline card) about History. I am very impressed with the details they shared with most of them using a KWO. Congratulations! Job well done teachers! Next Week's Presentation - Science: Tell us about outer space - planets, sun, moon, stars, solar systems, comets space program. I did tell them I am open to topics on whatever science they are doing, physics is fine, too.

Since new grammar and review is back to back we incorporated review as we learn our new grammar. We were able to review English, Science, History, Latin (Week 1-15) and Geography (all of Europe that we already covered) The kids were wonderful... seems like everybody is preparing for memory masters. Metric measurement, the kids can recite this in their sleep. So, I took it a notch up by letting them apply what they are learning. We did a little bit of conversions. It was a little bit challenging for some of them, but they are in the dialectic stage, and it is nice for them to understand what they already know. Keep practicing! In the next few weeks, we will be learning Geometry. Expect more applications for Math!

Week 14
An exciting and wonderful week for everyone. The kids are all fired up and ready for learning. Thank you so much for preparing your kids for class. It has been a great privilege to be working with them. Ruthie, we miss you!
Presentation was fun with funny moments. We had kids who shared about a husband and wife missionary team. I told the kids that we can all be heroes of faith as long as we are doing what God wants us to do in our lives. Next Week's presentation: History - Pick a timeline card and expound on it. I told them to pick anything they want, but I suggested a topic around the time of the Middle Ages since this is the Time Period we are in. Since you are the teachers, you get to decide what is best for your children. 😇😇😇
Science with Mr. Herson was about surface tension. It was indeed an exciting experiment. Thank you Mr. Herson for explaining more about the atoms and molecules of water. For more on surface tension, check this out (I like how the illustration shows that the molecules on the surface form stronger bonds). For a fun science experiment with art included, you can do this.

The kids know the present tense conjugation really well so, we worked more on the Present Active Indicative (paralleling the Present Tense). We started memorizing sum - I am, es - You are, est- He/She/It is...etc. Just a confirmation (I checked with Mrs. Reid), all the kids need to know is the Latin part, but if they know the English part, it would be great. Again, this is up to you dear teachers.

We are introduced to Adverbs. Since the kids know the definition already, I gave them examples on how an adverb modifies a verb, adjective and another adverb. I believe most of them had a good grasp of adverbs.

Acids and Bases... I expound more on why we decided to use ions instead of atoms (which is in the Foundations Guide). Ions, being charged atoms, is more appropriate for the memory sentence. Please take note of this change. I discussed a little bit about pH, when it is an acid or a base. I was looking to purchase litmus paper locally but unfortunately, I was not able to find it. Thank you Mr. Boyer for volunteering to bring some next week. If you need readings on how to explain more on acids and bases, check this and this and this. This is also a good one on how to explain it to the kids.

We learned about the leaders during World War I. Since they know the memory work, I sort of tested them by asking which leader when I give them the country and which country when I give them the leader. It was a good way for them to really understand what they are memorizing. Next week, we will discuss how and why World War I started, if they want to read about it to contribute to class discussion, that would be great.

With kids knowing the Timeline really well, we went through the Timeline only a few times. We worked mostly on checking what is before a certain event.

Baltic Europe - our hint is ELLE P (our classmate, the kids said "ELLE Person")😉😉. We were able to do a little bit of review of the Europe's map, as well.

The kids know the linear equivalents really well and I am sure they can recite them in their sleep. So, we focused on application - How many centimeters in 5 inches? How many inches in 9 ft? How many ft in 5 miles? Something like that. I don't know where they are in their Math curriculum. I just said, it would be great for them to know in conversion, the concept of whether they need to divide or multiply. Have fun practicing the application with them at home.
Fine Arts
Our artist for this week is Carl Linneaus (Carl von Linne). We focused on proportion by placing the flower on another sheet of paper to see where and how big the flower is, the stem and leaves. I am really impressed with the flowers they drew with all the details they put in their artwork. The kids are becoming budding artists... Congratulations! For more on Carl Linneaus, check out this and this site. Next week, is it possible for the kids to bring crayons, color pencils, water color, etc.?
Review
As always we only had 15 minutes of review time, but we made the most of our 15 minutes ++. I reminded them of the class' goal of memorizing Ephesians 6. They did really well on the first nine verses. We reviewed from verses 10-14. It is easier to do one verse at a time than to do it all at once (same as our memory work). I told them that even if they don't do it as a family, they can still do it themselves. Please help us reach our class goal. Thank you very much! We are doing great as a class so far. Thank you so much for all your hard work!

We learned about the leaders during World War I. Since they know the memory work, I sort of tested them by asking which leader when I give them the country and which country when I give them the leader. It was a good way for them to really understand what they are memorizing. Next week, we will discuss how and why World War I started, if they want to read about it to contribute to class discussion, that would be great.

With kids knowing the Timeline really well, we went through the Timeline only a few times. We worked mostly on checking what is before a certain event.

The kids know the linear equivalents really well and I am sure they can recite them in their sleep. So, we focused on application - How many centimeters in 5 inches? How many inches in 9 ft? How many ft in 5 miles? Something like that. I don't know where they are in their Math curriculum. I just said, it would be great for them to know in conversion, the concept of whether they need to divide or multiply. Have fun practicing the application with them at home.
Fine Arts
Our artist for this week is Carl Linneaus (Carl von Linne). We focused on proportion by placing the flower on another sheet of paper to see where and how big the flower is, the stem and leaves. I am really impressed with the flowers they drew with all the details they put in their artwork. The kids are becoming budding artists... Congratulations! For more on Carl Linneaus, check out this and this site. Next week, is it possible for the kids to bring crayons, color pencils, water color, etc.?
Review
As always we only had 15 minutes of review time, but we made the most of our 15 minutes ++. I reminded them of the class' goal of memorizing Ephesians 6. They did really well on the first nine verses. We reviewed from verses 10-14. It is easier to do one verse at a time than to do it all at once (same as our memory work). I told them that even if they don't do it as a family, they can still do it themselves. Please help us reach our class goal. Thank you very much! We are doing great as a class so far. Thank you so much for all your hard work!

Week 13
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I sure hope everyone had a wonderful break and is ready for the new 12 weeks of school. I have to say I was really glad to see everyone last week trying out for the mock Memory Master testing. Congratulations for a job well done!
Presentation was really fun. We had an impromptu - gather your thoughts in 30 seconds and tell us something about the question you drew from the hat. Everyone did wonderfully. Thank you so much and I am really glad to have known you better. Jayven shared about a Behemoth (dinosaur) in the Bible, if you want to read about it, read Job 40:15-18. Next week's presentation is "Tell us about a Biblical hero of faith or missionary." When did they live? What did they do? Why are they a hero? Enjoy preparing!
Science experiment with Mr. Herson was about sound and sound waves. We had a wonderful time testing things and looking at the water moving. This is a wonderful video of music with stemmed wineglasses. It is amazing!

We started a new unit in Fine Arts - the Great Artists. We learned a little bit about Rembrandt and his work. If you want to learn more about Rembrandt, check out this site. We focused on his light and shadow art. How the effect of light and shadow gives life to a painting. I chose to teach the kids the concept of light and shadow in a pot, hoping they will be able to use the concept in their other drawings in the future. I discussed a little bit about the part that is the brightest and the darkest in an object when light is shone. Check this site out for more explanation on light and shadow. This is where I got the idea for the project for class. Enjoy shading. For next week's art, would the kids be able to bring one flower each?
Review
I can summarize review in one word - AWESOME! I really am so proud of the kids for their determination to finish well this year. I can see that each and everyone of them is decided and dedicated to do "Memory Masters". I have no doubt in their abilities and support them all the way. We were able to review Weeks 1 -13 of Science, English, History, and Latin with the 15 minutes that we have. They can easily answer the questions without even blinking. They all know that they need to work on their multiplication table especially the 13's, 14's, and 15's. (I have a plan for this... any suggestion will be welcomed). I am just so proud of them. Keep on encouraging them. I did tell them that going for memory master is a wonderful goal, but I still encourage them to enjoy the learning behind the memory work. The kids are just awesome. Thank you for the opportunity of teaching them, it has been a wonderful blessing!

Week 12
Congratulations everyone for a job well done. We finished half year of CC amazingly strong. Continue on giving your best in every endeavor you undertake.
Presentation was entertaining. The kids shared their favorite Christmas family tradition... the common theme is family. Christmas is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. It reminds us not only of our love for each other, but most especially also of God's love for us by sending His one and only Son, Jesus, to us.
Science experiment is more a Science craft; we made constellation scopes. The kids were excited of what their scopes would look like, and I asked them to share what it looks like when they try it at home. This is the site where we got the project idea. Have fun!
We talked a little about the moon calendar we filled out. I asked the kids how they liked the activity. Most of them enjoyed it even if they did not fill out the calendar. I told them I don't really mind the if they did not fill out the calendar as long as they learn from real life. They are excited to do it again, and I suggested that it would be great to do it sometime in the spring or summer (the link for the moon calendar is in the previous blog). I encouraged them to take every opportunity to learn beyond the books that they are reading. It is a very stimulating way to learn.

We traveled to the Eastern European Seas - the kids noted that they have different colors. We did not have enough time to discuss about USSR, but I promised them I would send the link to you, so here is the link. It would be great for them to see where and what the countries (former USSR) are in the map as we continue on the whole of Europe next semester. And I told them to try to trace the map of Europe (on a tracing paper) this Christmas break. It would be a good start to prepare them for Challenge.
Review
We were able to review all weeks of History, Science, Latin, and English this week. from my observation, the kids are struggling with the different pronouns for English. I told them to make a sentence and keep replacing it with the pronouns. We were unable to review Timeline and Geography. Continue to work on them at home. The kids all raised their hands when I asked who will be going for Memory Masters and I am really proud of them. Continue reviewing their memory work at home for Mock Memory Masters testing on January 9, 2017. I know they all can do it... NO DOUBT!
Fine Arts
The end of tin whistle and our music theory. We reviewed everything we learned in theory, and as a final review, we looked at a real music score and identified things in the music that we know. The kids did wonderfully. For "Silent Night", we divided the class in two - melody and harmony. Melody Kids - Elle, Reid, Nolan and Ruthie. Harmony Kids - Jacob, Jayven, Caroline, Ellie and Dawn. I told them I will not force them to memorize the piece; I would only encourage them to memorize it... hahaha! They need to work on speed (they go too fast on the parts they know and slow on the parts that they don't) and closing the holes tightly. Please encourage them to practice their part for the Christmas program. I would appreciate it very much. I believe I forgot to send the music via email last week. I will do it this time, promise!

Week 11
Hello to everyone! I am always amazed at how the kids take care and love each other. I am doubly blest with their love for me. Thank you, girls for the card and the drawing on the board. It is a wonderful encouragement to me. Nolan, we missed you.
Presentation was exciting. I am very impressed with the books the kids are reading. We had books written by great authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis , etc. The amazing thing is the kids are able to talk about most of the books that was shared. Presentation was more of a book discussion, which is so awesome. Treasure this wonderful time of reading. Next week's presentation - "Tell us about your favorite family tradition for Christmas."
I can only say one word for the Science experiment - ROCKETS! We had a marvelous time launching the rockets and comparing them. However, we did not know what was the final verdict on which rocket flew higher. A question for Mr. Herson next week, kids.

We reviewed the timeline section taught during the opening ceremony. The kids had more fun finding out what was before a certain time period. This is a great exercise and challenge for the kids who had memorize the Timeline song for many years.

I briefly talked to them about the French Revolution. I guess I was mixing my words at that time because the kids were so quiet, or maybe they are just really paying attention. To read more on the French revolution, look at this site or this site.

First conjugation future perfect tense... When we were learning future tense, our hint was a bow (bo). Now with future perfect, our hint is an arrow (ero). We even had an opportunity to review all of the Latin conjugation.

We learned about the cubes. They are really good with skip counting, so to challenge them, I asked them about cubes out of order (e.g. 7 cubes, 9 cubes). they struggled, but I believed they had fun.

We were in Eastern Europe and we learned that Istanbul used to be named Constantinople. This is a good reading site about Constantinople during the Byzantine Empire. I also mentioned to the kids that part of Turkey is located in Europe and part of Turkey is in Asia. Check out this site for more on Turkey... and yes, I remembered the body of water - Bosporus strait.
The water behind us is the Bosporus strait. We were in Istanbul (Europe part of Turkey), and the land behind the water is the part of Turkey in Asia. We also learned that Russia used to be USSR. I asked the kids to check out what independent countries now, used to be part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. This is their homework (if they remember), and we might talk about it next week. Have fun researching. I will send a good site to check out about USSR next week (just in case the kids are reading this blog).

We reviewed a little bit of our theory. I introduced new grammar (mostly Italian words), piano, forte, mezzo, crescendo, diminuendo, legato and staccato. Next week will be our last week in music theory, it would be great if you can review what we learned the past six weeks. We will be looking at real music and see how we can read the music score. We also practiced our "Silent Night". The kids are doing great. I heard most of them. I just need to hear from a few of them so we can balance the sound of the melody and harmony part. Please remind them to keep practicing both melody and harmony. I will send the music via email attachment just in case some of them lose the copy of the music. Awesome job, Jacob for finishing the assignment on "We Three Kings". We will play this music again next week. I gave them a copy of "Ode to Joy" for tin whistle without the finger holes. My goal for them is to be able to play music just by looking at any piece of music (in the key of D, of course) without depending on the finger hole chart. It would be great and the kids will surely feel accomplished. Remember to bring your tin whistle next week. I really hope that everyone can play the tin whistle next week. It will be our last rehearsal for our Christmas program. If siblings are sharing the tin whistle, please take note that our schedule for tin whistle is 11:00 am - 11;30 am (more or less). Review
We practiced our verse, Ephesians 6:1-9, the song (acapella) and the sign language. The kids did great. I have decided that we will not use any background music, because the kids sang it perfectly. Review game today was Math only. The kids did wonderfully with tables from 1 to 10, they started to struggle a little bit in the 11's and 12's, but they really struggled in the 13's, 14's and 15's. Keep on practicing the tables... challenge them by making it a game. I am sure they will enjoy it.
I almost forgot... we should be finished with our moon calendar this coming weekend (Dec. 12 is 29 days from Nov. 14). If they can bring their calendar with them, it would be a wonderful discussion topic.

Awesome job, Jacob for finishing the assignment on "We Three Kings". We will play this music again next week. I gave them a copy of "Ode to Joy" for tin whistle without the finger holes. My goal for them is to be able to play music just by looking at any piece of music (in the key of D, of course) without depending on the finger hole chart. It would be great and the kids will surely feel accomplished. Remember to bring your tin whistle next week. I really hope that everyone can play the tin whistle next week. It will be our last rehearsal for our Christmas program. If siblings are sharing the tin whistle, please take note that our schedule for tin whistle is 11:00 am - 11;30 am (more or less). Review
We practiced our verse, Ephesians 6:1-9, the song (acapella) and the sign language. The kids did great. I have decided that we will not use any background music, because the kids sang it perfectly. Review game today was Math only. The kids did wonderfully with tables from 1 to 10, they started to struggle a little bit in the 11's and 12's, but they really struggled in the 13's, 14's and 15's. Keep on practicing the tables... challenge them by making it a game. I am sure they will enjoy it.
I almost forgot... we should be finished with our moon calendar this coming weekend (Dec. 12 is 29 days from Nov. 14). If they can bring their calendar with them, it would be a wonderful discussion topic.
