I am really sorry for a very late post. Life happens and somehow you can't stop it... haha! By the way, just a quick info - this is is Fire Prevention Week and in this light, I'd like to share with you this site if you need Fire Safety for your portfolio. Have Fun!
I enjoyed getting to know everyone through knowing your favorite animals. We do learn new things everyday. Thanks for sharing the interesting facts about your favorite animals. The skill we learned this past week is speaking clearly. Next time, you have different choices of presentation topic. Show and tell: Your choice - Who gave it to you? What does it look like? Where and When did you get it? Why do you like it? or Persuasion: Your choice - pick any topic you feel strongly about and persuade the audience to change their belief. or Share anything exciting going on in your life (e.g. the new York trip, for those going to Ellis Island). The skill we are learning this week is POISE. Have fun preparing.
Science experiment was about the SKIN. Thank you Mrs. Pizzica for leading the science experiment. We had fun cleaning the tables, did we not? If you want to read more about the layers of the skin and its function, This is a fun site to visit.
New Grammar
Timeline: Song -CC CD
We sang through the timeline song and even got the chance to go back as far as 1000B.C. Hand motions are the ones taught during the opening ceremony.
History: Song - CC CD
This is a fun one, and hand motions are as follows:
New York - right Y-hand go over the left open palm's up hand.
George Washington - right G-hand move from left shoulder going down.
power - both arms move from the sides to the chest (strength)
responsibilities - the fingers of both hands taps the right side of chest close to the shoulder.
Constitution - right C-hand move from left open palm hand to the left elbow.
This might be a good site to learn more about George Washington. I believe it was meant to be used for George Washington's exhibit in one of the Smithsonian Museum a while back, but it sure has a lot of wonderful information (one of the timeline I gave you was taken from here).
Science: Song - NoGreaterJoy
The kids know this well so I did not have to explain much. Hand motions are as follows:
sight - point to the eyes
hearing - point to the ears
taste - point to tongue
smell - point to nose
touch - clasp both hands together
Math: Song - CC CD
We skip counted through 9 and 10. I gave them sort of a trick on the 9's which I hope will help them through the 9's. We did not have a problem with the 10's.
English: Song - NoGreaterJoy
We vocalized through the "to be". We will have a series of these irregular verbs which we will do in the next few weeks... I'm kinda lost for ideas on this one... Any suggestions?
Latin: Song - NoGreaterJoy
We continue with the same song from last time and we worked on the following verbs with the following hand motions:
facta/factum - both hands in a fist, one on top of the other and then twist.
missus - left open palm hand while right hand do a sweeping motion going out.
comprehenderent - right close fist hand on right side of the head and flick index finger out (sort of a light bulb moment)
lucet - left open palm down hand and right middle finger moves up and out while sort of shaking.
fuit - right open palm hand points out
Geography: Song - CC CD
Trace, point and say the five states and we sort of review some of the other states we learned. Keep on reviewing the different states because we are adding more soon. Thank you to Mrs. Thompson for reminding us that Columbus is the capital of Ohio and Columbia is the capital of South Carolina so we don't confuse the two.
Fine Arts
We did perspective drawing and we learned a little bit about linear (one-point, two-point and three point perspective), overlapping and tonal perspective. If you want to work with them more, the following books might help:
Mastering Art Drawing by Anthony Hodge (pg. 16-17)
Art for Kids Drawing by Kathyrn Temple (Chapter 5)
Review Game was really exciting. Congratulations everyone for doing really well... keep on reviewing your memory work. You have an extra week for review! Enjoy and have fun.
