Week 18
Hello everyone,
We are three quarters done... Hooray!
Thank you to the Delaware Symphony Orchestra...especially Naomi. It was fun, wasn't it. Next Week, please bring your coloring materials and pencils for our last lesson on the Great Artist.
Presentation was great. It was fun to see them convince their fellow classmates to buy something real or made-up. In the next two weeks, the presentation is Demonstration - demonstrate how to do something, make something, fix something, or use something. And next week will be the boys turn. The following week will be the girls'. Have fun preparing. Each child is allotted 4-5 minutes, please be sure to stick to the time limit. Thank you very much.
Thank you Mr. Herson for the wonderful Science Experiment on crystals. I hope you had fun replicating the experiment at home.

We sang through the timeline and did the hand motions taught during the opening ceremony.
History: Song - CC CD
I briefly told them what was happening right before the bombing of the Pearl Harbor and why the American joined World War 2. We were even able to review the history sentence on WW II. They have very good questions on WWI and WW II, and I am very very happy to see them wanting to learn more than the history sentences. We sang through the song a lot of times. I did have hand motions we did not use but if you want to know the hand motions I will post it next time or you can just come to me.

I explained how we got the 1/2 base x height in the simplest term I am able. I will send the illustration I used on the board. We went over the formula a lot of times and reviewed the two other formulas we've learned already.

We continued with the third four elements and reviewed the first eight. As a confirmation, for those doing memory masters, they need to know the atomic number, element and atomic mass. In your worksheet packet, I've included the notebooking page for the elements again. It is for you to photocopy (one page per element), just in case you miss it the last time I gave it out. Enjoy! And I forgot to mention, we use the Basher Science The Periodic Table Flash Cards to learn the elements and have fun at the same time.

We sang through the definition of "subject" with slight modification of the song. I am not sure how the definition is stated in the previous version, it seems like there is a little difference, so please take note.
Latin: Song - Opening Ceremony Song
We continued with John 1:5. The words we used are light, darkness, shines.
Geography: Song - CCC NoGreaterJoy
We learned about the Rivers (West) while reviewing the Rivers (East). Take extra time to review the rivers at home as the maps we are using in class is a little bit challenging.
We did not have time for the Review Game, but will make sure to get to it next week.

Week 17
Hello everyone. It was a wet and dangerous start for most of us but we made it through. Cosmo, we were glad to see you before the end of the class. Nolan, we missed you. Hope everything is okay.
We started with presentation and I have to say I am very impressed with everyone's preparation, we heard about Queen Elizabeth, Billy Graham, Beatrix Potter, Ben Franklin, James Cook and a special shell... Thank you very much for the great presentations every week. Next week's presentation: Persuasion: Create a commercial that would persuade your audience to buy your real or imaginary product. Enhance your presentation with props, gestures and expression. Happy preparation. The girls asked me if they can do their presentation together, I said it is fine as long as they can do it together during the week... the beginning of group projects. Thoughts anyone?
Science experiment for this week is testing for starch. We had fun trying to figure out which item has starch and which ones does not. The children were surprised that the paper has starch. I told them if they are interested, they can try the experiment at home. Have fun.

We went through the timeline a lot of times with hand motions as I remembered from last year. We might go over the hand motions during the opening ceremony next week. We reviewed from Age of Industry and they are doing really well. Keep on reviewing at home.

I briefly explained the story of the journey of the Lusitania during World War I and how the United States joined the world war. We sang through the history sentence a lot of times and did the following hand motions:
President Wilson - trace outline of glasses
Congress - C-hand touches the left side of shoulder and crosses over to touch the right shoulder
war - palm-in curved 5-hands move from side-to-side
Central Powers - (Central) bent right hand makes a circular motion and then lands on the center of the palm of the opposite hand
German - right and left palm in five hands cross at wrists and fingers wiggle
sank - right 3-hand moves downward while opposite hand remains stationary above it with palms facing down
American - fingers of both hands interlocked and move in a semi-circle from left to right in front of the body and hands separate and comes down to the sides of the body

Same as last week, I drew a grid of a square and told them the area is all the little squares inside. Technically, it can be length times width but since the sides are the same, it is the side squared.

Finally, this is the last of the irregular verbs...Hooray! We reviewed the definition of infinitive, present participle and past participle. Because i told them, I don't want them to just memorize the series of word but to really used the definition to figure out the tenses.

We continued with the second four element while reviewing the first four. I gave them an easy way to remember this week's memory work by telling them the atomic mass is doubled the atomic number for most of them except Boron. Keep on reviewing... I am impressed that the kids are memorizing this already, I didn't even know the Periodic Table until I was in High School (Junior Year).

We learned about the Eastern River. Keep on reviewing the physical features at home and have fun.
Fine Arts
We learned about Roy Lichtenstein. The children seemed to enjoy the project. We used q-tips to make the dots (pixels). If you want to do it at home, you can use markers (less mess) or q-tips and acrylic paints. We will continue with the last lesson on the Great Artist in two weeks. An important announcement for next week - We will be learning about the orchestra (Great Composers) at the beginning of the day from the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, so please make sure to be in the sanctuary at 9am.
Review Game
Bowling... the children had so much fun...I did, too. What touches me the most is that they know most of the answers, and for the ones that they were unsure of, a little hint made a lot of difference. Keep on reviewing and I am hoping I will see everybody in Memory Masters (fingers crossed). Hooray for everybody especially for all the parents. I will continue to say, #bestparentsever.
